Our Partnering Process
Designing and producing a handmade tapestry or rug is a hands-on collaboration every step of the way.
1
Establish the design
Aside from purchasing a tapestry or rug from our small inventory, your piece will be made-to-order
specially for you. Our approach offers you several options:
. select a design from our collections without any changes in size, pattern, and colorway
OR
. select a design from our collections and have it customized in size, pattern, or colorway to best fit your personal style and home decor
OR
. have an entirely new design created for you from your own inspirations
2
Approve the Design Plate
Once the design and cost are finalized, the Design Plate is approved along with all the specifications for pattern, size, yarns, colors, and pile.
3
Complete Initial Transactions
Following receipt of the initial deposit, the Design Plate and specifications for your tapestry or rug are then sent to our Nepalese partners to begin production.
4
Set into Production
Our Nepalese partners orchestrate the entire production of the many artisans who then begin all the different steps of handmaking your piece:
. hand-carding and hand-spinning the yarns
. hand-dyeing the yarns to color specifications
. weaving the yarns on the loom... one hand-knot at a time
. hand-washing the piece
. stretching the piece and setting it to dry in the sun
. hand-sheering the piece to the desired pile height
. hand-binding all the edges
. hand-carving in selected areas
5
Follow the Journey
As your new tapestry or rug is coming to life, we will send you occasional photos in its various stages of production, so you can witness some of its exciting journey along the way.

Our handmade tapestries & rugs are:
. one-of-a-kind and made-to-order (with exception to a small inventory in our gallery)
. exquisitely handcrafted by our Nepalese artisans and weavers
. hand-knotted in a density of 100 knots per square inch or more
. made with 100% Tibetan Wool or Silk or combinations of both
. hardy because the Tibetan Wool provides a built-in natural protective barrier due to its high lanolin content. These sheep roam the Himalayan Highlands and have adapted to the high altitudes and harsh environments, so the lanolin rich qualities are inherent in their wool.
. crafted with hand-carded and hand-spun yarns. Preparing the yarns by hand vs. by machine further enhances the rich texture, luster, tensile strength, and durability as well as the overall handmade
appeal.
. a collaboration which can take 12-16 weeks to produce
Some additional design services:
Some projects are best served with additional design services in order to design and produce that perfect tapestry or rug for you. With over 45 years practicing her design business, interior designer and rug designer Joanne Hurd can also provide:
. room space planning or art wall compositions to determine the best tapestry or rug size
. design expertise and guidance with your interior design decisions impacted by your new tapestry or rug
. 3D graphic illustration and colored photorealistic renderings so you can visualize optional tapestry or rug designs in your room before making final decisions.
For a wall-mounted tapestry or rug, we can complete the picture:
We design and fabricate custom decorative mounting rails and frames for your wall-mounted pieces. Designed as an integral part of the overall artwork in conjunction with your personal styles and home decor, these pieces are fabricated in the local workshop and are made primarily of both native and exotic woods and can be adorned with glass, fabric, metal, mirror, stone, contrasting woods, and more.
